We are still talking about names…this time though we have invented the story ourselves. Even if we are always talking about popular wisdom this story rings decisively more matter of fact. This story is about how the name of a wine is born.

The drunken wife is the name that we wanted to give to our Chiaretto, and it is a name that was born partly as a joke and partly pride in response to many circumstances ( and maybe today not as often as before)- to hear one speak about Rose’ wines, turning up their nose, a little scornful, one would respond: “no I’m not interested in Rose’….. it’s a woman’s drink.”

But, Il chiaretto can be a seductive and deceptive wine: a wine of structure, of a certain body but also with a delicate nose of flowers, a fresh mouth. When the sun gets hotter it’s difficult to say no to another glass….it’s like this, one glass after the other that one knows how it’s going to end: that the wife, however much she likes the wine will get drunk! and with her the husband (yes!the same person who before turned up his nose….)

It’s like this that we like to find solutions to the impossible and solve them, offering our friends for once the occasion to bring this wine to the table. A full bottle (Our traditional red from the Groppello grape that has found it’s own identity) and the drunken wife.

The popular Italian saying infact describes the tough job of the cunning cellarman who always wants the bottle full and the wife drunk. ( always wants his cake and eat it.)

See you the next time.
