Taken from the ancients it was the widespread belief that the name of something described it’s essence. Basia ( with the accent on the a) is the name which is traditionally known as the restaurant where our farm is found.
That is to say, traditionally a long time before the farm was born. It is now more than thirty years ago.
This place takes it's name from a very common object which was used as part of the daily habits of the peasants who lived in the area. Infact, the name Basia which comes from the local dialect means a sort of large hollow container where food is served. The equivalent of a soup tureen or salad bowl today. The same noun is widespread in a large part of the lombard region, from Brescia and as far as Pavia. According to different versions of the pronunciation of the word: Basla, basgia, bargia... all refer to in one way or another this container.
It seems, it is its own conformation of the place with its large shell overlapped by vineyards and olive trees gives the name to the restaurant. A large shell that reminds us of a Basia, a container for food. For simlpe food, often peasant food like Polenta for example.
And who knows what the significance of this will have…. if in this very shell here at the Basia after some time a special polenta will be created…. who knows if the ancients were ahead their of time and are right. If today La Basia with its large shell has become the large container of alot of good and honest food coltivated and prepared with care and passion.
See you next time.
